Abbey VR Demo
TACT Digital have created this short virtual tour to demonstrate the graphic style, navigation method and types of information that we intend to use in our community heritage project - a digital reconstruction of Kilwinning Abbey.
Instructions:
• PC's and Laptops - click and drag your left mouse/keypad to look around 360° degrees and use left mouse button to click on navigation arrows and info hotspots.
• Tablets and Smartphones - either swipe your finger or move your device up/down/left/right to look around. Press your finger on navigation arrows and info hotspots.
• VR Headsets - click on the icon at the bottom right of the screen to enter VR mode. Move by looking at navigation hotspots for 2 seconds.
We hope you enjoy this quick exploration of a generic abbey environment (garden, cloister and warming room) and we're looking forward to sharing updates on the project as it progresses.
The cloister is a covered walkway built around a central garden - or 'garth' as it was known.
The cloisters were used daily by the monks for exercise, study and movement under cover between the different parts of the abbey.
It was also a quiet space where the monks could reflect and meditate.

Also known as the 'calefactory', the warming room was the only place in the abbey where there was a fire for the purpose of warmth (the kitchen and the infirmary also had fires for practical reasons).
It was like a common room for the monks - although there was no talking permitted and monks were only allowed to gather here for short periods of time.
The fire was usually lit on All Saints Day (1st November) and was allowed to burn until Good Friday (anywhere between 20th March and 23rd April).
Historians suggest that clothes were also dried in the warming room during the winter months.
The size of the room was indicative of the number of monks it might have to accommodate.
The communal garden (known as the 'garth') was usually situated in the middle of the cloister area of the abbey.
It would've been used to grow herbs for cooking and medicinal use as well as growing flowers for the altar.
In some monasteries the cloister garden was a simple lawn while in others it was used to grow vegetables.
It was also common to have a well for fresh water situated here.
